Khon Kaen University is the first institution of higher learning in the northeastern region of Thailand. Although the concept of establishing the university dates back to before World War II, serious preparations for its construction began during the government of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, as efforts to develop this part of the country commenced in 1962. Construction began in 1964, following the resolution to establish a higher education institution focusing on engineering and agriculture in Si Than, Khon Kaen Province. The institution was initially named the Northeastern University, with the English name Khon Kaen Institute of Technology, abbreviated as K.I.T., under the auspices of the National Education Council. In 1965, the Cabinet decided to change the name to Khon Kaen University, with a royal decree officially establishing the institution published in the Royal Gazette on January 25, 1966. This date is recognized as the day of the university's foundation, with His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen presiding over the opening ceremony on December 20, 1967. Khon Kaen University serves as a hub of ideas and intellect within society and a center for higher education in the region. It is situated on approximately 5,500 acres of undulating red soil known as "Modin Daeng." The university comprises 25 faculties that produce graduates across various fields. Additionally, it features Srinagarind Hospital and other equivalent departments, which offer academic services and community support, including a post office, cooperative center, shops, dormitories, housing, flats, guesthouses, a bank, schools, and various public utilities to serve staff, students, and the general public comprehensively. In a travel blog about Khon Kaen Province, one can experience and learn about local wisdom sustainably through craft routes. The "Kum Sukho" handicraft group offers a glimpse into traditional lifestyles, enriched by the artistic faith of "Hoop Taem Sim Isan." Anyone visiting this region cannot resist from indulging in the assortment of delectable treats at the cafés and snack shops, even if it means gaining a few extra pounds!
