Staying at a homestay by the estuary, I immersed myself in the coastal fishing community of Trang River’s mouth. The view from the terrace of the homestay in Ban Bo Hin showcases a line of hills stretching along the coastline, with a mangrove forest as far as the eye can see across the wetlands of Trang River’s mouth. In front of the house, fish cages are lined up, painting a vivid picture of local life. The residents of Bo Hin have united to unveil a new dimension of tourism in the serene Siket Sea, which we often imagine as pristine turquoise waters and soft sandy beaches, revitalizing it by connecting it to the massive mangrove forests in the lowlands of Trang River. This area serves as a natural breeding ground for marine species while the mangrove trees protect the coast by buffering the impact of winds and waves during the monsoon season, trapping fine sediments to create softer mud beaches near the river mouth. The unique muddy beaches in Bo Hin are further distinguished by clear pools of water formed by warm underground springs. Moreover, this location features a seagrass bank to propagate seagrass in cultivation plots. Not only is this vital for the diet of dugongs, but it also contributes to the creation of a spectacular shallow marine ecosystem. Our time at the fine, white sands of Kae Ta Wan Beach to witness the sunset beautifully wrapped up our experience, merging the community with nature. The activities at Ban Bo Hin over the three days and two nights were both enjoyable and engaging, showcasing the local community's potential to manage tourism effectively.
