Doi Mod

Mae Chedi Mai, Wiang Pa Pao

For all the avid hikers and nature lovers out there, it would be a great miss in life to have only heard of, but never actually experienced the stunning beauty of Doi Mod. Doi Mod is located within the Khun Chae National Park, in the Mae Jadei Mai Subdistrict, Wiang Pa Pao District, Chiang Rai. The journey to the summit is filled with a dense, lush rainforest, home to a variety of plant species such as terrestrial orchids, ferns, moss, and other greenery, providing a soothing and humid atmosphere throughout. At an elevation of 1,700 meters, the summit is adorned with rich, vibrant forests. The trek can be completed in 2 days and 1 night, making Doi Mod a picturesque destination enveloped in breathtaking natural scenery. The name "Doi Mod" invites speculation: some might wonder if it refers to its small size, akin to an ant, or perhaps the abundance of ants found there. In truth, the original name given by the local inhabitants was "Doi Mod," which eventually evolved into its current form. The term "Doi Mod" signifies that the top of the hill is barren, lacking any large trees due to strong winds preventing vegetation from taking root. This unique aspect gives Doi Mod its distinctive shape. Moreover, Doi Mod is significant for the livelihood of the communities residing at its foothills, as it serves as the source of several rivers, including the Lang River, Mae Jadei River, Mae Wong River, and Mae Khod River. These water sources not only sustain the local population but also provide essential irrigation for agriculture in the areas they traverse before merging into the Kok River. Doi Mod stands tall at around 1,800 meters above sea level and offers visitors the chance to appreciate its height from a nearby mountain. The national park provides various amenities including accommodations and campsites to facilitate visitors, as well as snack shops and fast food options. For those interested in more information, you can contact Khun Chae National Park directly at 08 4489 2173 or 0 5316 3364.
