Kham Kem Old Church

Tambon Ajsamsarn, Mueang Nakhon Phanom District.

Located in the subdistrict of Aj Chamsamarn, this is the third Catholic church in the northeastern region of Thailand. It was completed in 1907 by Father Fresnel of the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP). When the old churches at Bung Ka Thae and Tha Rae were dismantled to make way for a new cathedral, the old church in Kham Kerm remained as the only Catholic church still standing, and it is the oldest one in the region. The church features a unique architectural style that combines Western and Eastern elements. The walls are made of solid brick and mortar, reflecting European strength, while the roof is constructed of wood and covered with wooden planks, resembling the traditional houses of the Isaan people of that era. Upon completion, a grand religious ceremony was held to celebrate the feast of St. Joseph on March 19, 1907, officiated by Bishop Marie Guérard, along with Father Kong Stang, Father Baptiste Prodome, and various missionaries.
