Si Satchanalai Historical Park

Sri Satchanalai, Sri Satchanalai.

For history enthusiasts, this is the perfect destination! Here, you will delve into the grand history of the Sukhothai period, a time that fills all Thai people with pride. The area encompasses the districts of Si Satchanalai, Sarachit, Nong Ao, and Tha Chai. The ancient city of Si Satchanalai is located within Phra Prang village in the Si Satchanalai district. Originally named "Muang Cheliang," it was later renamed "Si Satchanalai" during the reign of the Phra Ruang dynasty, who established the city as a new center of administration, replacing Muang Cheliang. Inside the historical park, you'll find an astonishing collection of 215 ancient sites and artifacts, of which 204 have already been discovered. Each site is imbued with the rich history worth exploring and admiring. One highlight is Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat (or Wat Phra Borom That Muang Cheliang), located approximately three kilometers southeast of the old city walls. This temple is filled with important ancient structures, including the main prang made of laterite and plaster, typical of Ayutthaya architecture. The central prang is accessible via a stairway leading to an archway, where you can still see remnants of wall paintings, albeit faded. At the front, the temple houses a large Buddha statue in the Mara Vijaya posture and to the right, a beautifully crafted stucco Buddha figure. The temple walls are built with laterite, and there is a large round platform arranged in a rectangular shape measuring 60 meters wide and 90 meters long. Above the gateway, a structure resembling a roof peak can be seen, with an intricate stucco representation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Also of significance is Phra That Mu Tao, located behind the main prang outside the inner walls, featuring a Mon-style stupa. Excavations in 1992 revealed beautiful gold fixtures adorning the stupa's apex. Additionally, there's a shrine dedicated to Phra Atharasa, believed to have been a temple housing a statue in a standing position. Other notable sites include Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat with a large Mara Vijaya Buddha statue, the brothers’ Buddha image located left of the main shrine, Wat Khao Phanom Phleung, and Wat Khao Suwannakiri. For example, at Wat Chang Lom, located within the city walls, you’ll find the principal stupa in the style of a Lanka, beautifully decorated, surrounded by 39 stucco elephants. Another interesting site is Wat Chedi Jet Thaew, showcasing various stupas that mix Sukhothai and Srivijaya art styles. It features a prominent lotus-bud stupa located at the rear of the main hall along with 33 smaller stupas. The park is open daily from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM, with admission fees of 20 baht for Thai nationals and 100 baht for foreigners. If you plan to enter the park with a vehicle, there is an additional fee. The park also provides tram services to explore the ancient sites, costing 10 baht for Thai visitors and 40 baht for international guests.
