Victory Monument

Phahonyothin Road, Thung Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi.

Victory Monument is a prominent landmark in Bangkok, situated at the center of a roundabout between Highway 1, Ratchawithi Road, and Phaya Thai Road, precisely located at kilometer 5.0 of Phahonyothin Road, with kilometer 0 of Phahonyothin positioned at the Democracy Monument, which is 5 kilometers away. This monument was erected to honor the valor of soldiers, police officers, and civilians who lost their lives during the conflicts between Thailand and France over border disputes with French Indochina, which resulted in significant casualties among both military and civilians. Architecturally, the Victory Monument resembles a bayonet, symbolizing the armament of the military. It comprises five bayonets combined into a flower-like structure, with the tips pointing upwards and the blades facing outward. Constructed with reinforced concrete and adorned with marble, the monument stands approximately 50 meters tall. The handle of the bayonet is positioned above the ceiling of the main hall, which houses the remains of soldiers who died in the Thai-French dispute. At the base of the monument, there are life-sized bronze statues of five types of warriors: army, navy, air force, police, and civilians. The outer walls of the hall feature bronze plaques inscribed with the names of 160 deceased individuals, including 94 army personnel, 41 navy members, 13 air force members, and 12 field police officers. As of today, the bronze plaques record the names of a total of 801 soldiers and volunteers who sacrificed their lives in various wars from 1940 to 1954, including the Thai-French conflict (Indochina War), World War II, and the Korean War. Beyond serving as an important memorial to fallen soldiers, the Victory Monument also marks the starting point of Phahonyothin Road and acts as a hub for transportation, with numerous public transport options including buses, the BTS Skytrain, and minivans operating along various routes both within Bangkok and to nearby provinces, available 24 hours a day. The area surrounding the Victory Monument includes Rajavithi Hospital, Phra Mongkutklao Hospital, Phra Mongkutlao Medical College, the Sirat Expressway, the BTS Victory Monument station, and various shops and services accommodating tourists waiting prior to their journeys. This makes the Victory Monument a vital transportation nexus in present-day Bangkok.
