Somdet Phra Srinakarin Park, Sakon Nakhon

That is the Cheeng Chum Shrine in Sakon Nakhon.

Somdej Phrachao Srinakarindra Park in Sakon Nakhon is a public park dedicated to honoring Her Royal Highness Princess Srinakarindra, the Princess Mother, on the occasion of her 80th birthday. It is the fifth of its kind and is located along the banks of Nong Han in the Tha Tuo Cheng Chum Subdistrict, Mueang Sakon Nakhon District, covering an area of 120 rai, with approximately 70 rai of land and 50 rai of water. The Princess Mother herself inaugurated the park on November 9, 1987. The park is managed by the Sakon Nakhon Municipality, and the main tree species found here is the golden shower tree (Cassia fistula). Somdej Phrachao Srinakarindra Park is adjacent to Nong Han, a large natural lagoon that spans several districts in Northeast Thailand. This area serves as a habitat for numerous aquatic animals and waterfowl. Part of the park extends into Nong Han, creating a picturesque landscape characterized by serene and majestic surroundings. At the center of the park lies a pond known as "Sra Phang Thong," which is steeped in legend. It is said to have been excavated by local villagers alongside Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, an important religious site in Sakon Nakhon dating back to the 16th Buddhist century. This pond is considered sacred, where locals and officials conduct various ceremonies using its water. A notable feature of the pond is a fountain, said to be the tallest in Thailand. The park's location by Nong Han and the presence of Sra Phang Thong, combined with abundant mature trees, provides a shaded and cool atmosphere. During the park’s development, large trees were planted to enhance shade, and flowering plants were added for aesthetic appeal. The park also includes forested areas, water gardens, ornamental stone gardens, and pathways for walking and jogging. In the winter, Somdej Phrachao Srinakarindra Park becomes especially beautiful, shrouded in soft mist, creating a memorable ambiance. Besides serving as a recreational space for the public, the park is a popular tourist destination and hosts various cultural and traditional events. Notable activities include the procession of the Phra Vessantara into the city during the Vessak Festival, the Loy Krathong festival where royal krathongs are offered by His Majesty the King and Queen, as well as the annual fish release ceremony and boat races during the end of the Buddhist Lent. The park is a model of multifunctional public space, providing an excellent venue for recreation, sports, culture, and important ceremonies and traditions.
