Udon Thani City Pillar Shrine

Makkhaeng Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District.

The City Pillar Shrine of Udon Thani serves as a center of respect and devotion, where the local people often come to pay their respects. Udon Thani is also home to other significant sacred figures that are highly revered, including Phra Buddha Pho Thong and Taewasakuwat. Each of these figures holds different beliefs related to holiness and auspiciousness. According to history, the City Pillar Shrine was first established in 1959, when the spirit of Major General Phra Chao Borom Wong Theva, the Duke of Prajak Silapakorn, who founded Udon Thani in 1893, was invited to reside at this sacred pillar. The pillar itself is made of a 5-meter long ironwood and is buried 3 meters deep, containing numerous talismans and gold and silver offerings placed beneath its base for blessings. In 1999, a new City Pillar Shrine was constructed to replace the original building, which had fallen into disrepair. The design of the new shrine reflects a blend of traditional Thai architecture and the artistic influences of the Isaan region, making it a continued site for worship and blessings for the people of Udon Thani. Additionally, in the vicinity of the City Pillar, there stands a statue of Taewasakuwat, one of the four guardians of the earth, who oversees the spirits. Thus, visiting the City Pillar Shrine of Udon Thani offers an opportunity to honor and request blessings from all three sacred entities in one visit.
