Wat Thungladya

Tambon Ladya, Mueang Kanchanaburi District.

Thung Lad Ya Temple, commonly referred to by locals as Lad Ya Temple, belongs to the Maha Nikai sect and is located in the administrative area of the Lad Ya Sub-district in Mueang Kanchanaburi District, Kanchanaburi Province, which is part of Region 14. The temple occupies an area of 46 rai and 77 square wa. Following the conclusion of the Thai-Burmese War during the reign of King Rama IV, more people began to settle along the banks of the Khwae Yai River, forming a bustling community. During this period, transportation relied on waterways, with travel taking place from the port town of Kadran and Si Sawat up north, using rafts or boats to navigate the Khwae Yai River. They would pass through Lad Ya village to reach Kanchanaburi at Pak Phraek. The journey back upstream had to be made overland, and both trips passed through the area of Lad Ya village. As the community grew denser, plans were made to construct a temple along the banks of the Khwae Yai River in Lad Ya village within Mueang Kanchanaburi District. Originally, Lad Ya Temple had a small ubosot (ordination hall) by the riverside, but it was eroded by the water, necessitating the construction of a new ubosot under the guidance of Phra Kanjanawattawiboon (Sorn Intasaro) in 1924. In 1982, Phra Kru Kanjanopamkhun (Lamyai Piyavanno) renamed "Lad Ya Temple" to "Thung Lad Ya Temple" to better reflect the local environment and historical events, particularly those from the Nine Armies War. The temple received royal permission to establish its ecclesiastical boundary on October 14, 1982.
