Wat Thavaransee, originally known as Wat Muang Ton, got its name from the village it belongs to. The name "Wat Sri Trai Mool" was derived from "Muang Ton" because it had a large mango tree planted to mark the path for the elephants of the ruler of Chiang Mai in ancient times. Today, it is called Wat Thavaransee because in 1941, the clerical committee, led by Phra Khru Rattanapanjaniyan (also known as Phothirangsee), who was the head monk of Chiang Mai at that time, visited this temple and noted its cleanliness and orderliness. Recognizing its significant potential for growth in the future, he decided to change its name from Wat Muang Ton (the single large mango tree) to Wat Thavaransee, which translates to "the radiance of stability."
