The Governor's Residence Museum in Nakhon Phanom (Old Building) is located on Sunthornvijit Road in the Nai Mueang Subdistrict. Originally, it was the private property of Phra Yakhun Phanomkhanarak (Uei Nakhonthan), the first governor of Nakhon Phanom. Construction took place between 1912 and 1914 by Vietnamese craftsmen, resulting in a two-story brick and mortar building styled in Western architecture, influenced by French construction methods during the Indo-China War. The roof is covered with Thai tiles, the ground floor features cement tiles, and the upper floor is laid with wooden planks. Notably, neither level has any columns, and not a single nail is used, as traditional wooden joinery techniques are employed to secure the building's structure. Subsequently, this building served as the residence for the successive governors of Nakhon Phanom. On November 12-13, 1955, the province allocated this building to host His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit during their visit to meet with local residents in the northeastern region. Today, the Fine Arts Department has registered this building as a historical site and transformed it into a museum to educate visitors about the significant historical narratives of Nakhon Phanom. It features an exhibition titled "Tales through Images," showcasing prominent photographs from the past, including an iconic image of an elderly woman named Mae Thao Tum Janthani. She offered a lotus flower to King Bhumibol Adulyadej during his visit to Nakhon Phanom in 1955, when she was 102 years old. Out of loyalty, she arrived early to present the flower, which had wilted by the afternoon due to the intense sunlight. Additionally, behind the governor's residence, there are two attached buildings that showcase stories about the traditional fireboat processions and the local cooking practices of the time. The museum opens for visits from Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as during Songkran), from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM.
