Phanok Khao is a towering mountain located along the Phong River, approximately 125 kilometers from Khon Kaen city. According to regional maps, Phanok Khao lies on the border between Khon Kaen and Loei provinces. To reach it, take Highway 2 and 201 from Khon Kaen to Wang Saphung. You’ll find Phanok Khao on the left side near the village of Dong Lan. This mountain features striking black stone formations, with patches of trees scattered across its slopes. For a clearer view of the owl-like silhouette that gives the mountain its name, venture into the Orchid Propagation Station under the Department of Forestry, which is situated across the road. Here, you will notice that the mountain's peak resembles an owl's crest, with rounded stones forming its head. At the center of the head is a distinct orange-hued stone marking the eye, leading down to the outstretched wings. For your journey, start from the city of Khon Kaen by taking Highway 12 through Chum Phae, then take a right onto Highway 201 toward Loei province. Phanok Khao is located alongside Highway 201, just 6 kilometers past Tham Pu Lub Cave, making the total distance from Khon Kaen approximately 127 kilometers.
